Plant an American Legacy
Did you know? The American Elm was once one of the most common street trees in America.
Planting the trees so close together on streets, yards, campuses allowed Dutch Elm Disease to travel from tree to tree through roots.
Dutch Elm Disease (DED) is caused by the fungus Ophio stoma novo-ulmi and is thought to have been brought to America in the 1930s from Europe.
DED resistant cultivars, including the Patriot, Frontier, Acco- lade, and Dynasty Elms, have been developed, and are available for planting.
The Top Five Reasons to Plant an Elm
- Hard, fibrous wood that resists strong winds²
- Cold hardy—can tolerate tempera-tures as low as –46ºF¹
- Can develop taproot to survive in dry conditions²
- Can live up to 400 yrs, with a mini-mum of 150 yrs — you will be planting a legacy that will last for future generations to enjoy²
- New cultivars have been developed that have the attractive growth habit of the American Elm, without the susceptibility to Dutch Elm Disease. A prime example of one of these cultivars is the Accolade Elm.
